Nikolaj Statkevich heads new Belarusian party named Narodnaya Hramada
28 November 2007
On 25 November, the founding congress of the social-democratic opposition party Narodnaya Hramada took place in Minsk. Nikolaj Statkevich was chosen as the party’s leader.
At the congress, the party program was established, and the delegates voted on a pro-European outlook for the party. Furthermore, a number of resolutions were passed, calling for change in Belarus, freedom for political prisoners, and free parliamentary elections.
The party is the successor to the Belarusian Social Democratic Party Narodnaya Hramada, which split in 2005. The party decided to change the name to prevent further confusion. Since the split there is another party called Belarusian Social Democratic Party Hramada, led by imprisoned Alexandr Kozulin.
