Democratic Party of Moldova and Social Liberal Party agree on merger

19 December 2007

On 15 December the national councils of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) and the Social Liberal Party (PSL) announced their intention to merge. The decision to approve the Agreement of Fusion was adopted within separate meetings of the two parties. The merger will take place through the disbandment of the PSL, which will then be absorbed into the PDM. The renewed PDM will continue under its old name, and “will pledge for the affirmation of the Republic of Moldova as an independent, unitary and democratic state, based on the rule of law and integrated in the united family of European democracies.” The PDM furthermore supports integration of Moldova in the EU and NATO, and will keep a social democratic orientation, “reaffirming its affiliation to the principles and the values of the Socialist International.”
