The wonderful win of Social Democrats in Slovenia
In the Slovenian parliamentary elections, on Sunday 21 September, the Social Democrats (SD) in Slovenia achieved a close and marvellous win over the ruling centre-right Democratic Party of Slovenia (SDS). After 99,97% of the votes have been counted, the SD got 30,5 % of the votes, which gives them 29 seats in the parliament, whilst the SDS got 29,3% of the votes. This close— approximately by 12.000 - 13.000 votes— win is rather spectacular as in the previous elections, four years ago, SD got only 10 % of the votes. The Premier of Slovenia Janez Jansa has congratulated the leader of SD Borut Pahor with the victory. The European Forum wants to congratulate our comrades of the SD with this incredible victory. SD and Kalander Foundation have been a source of enormous help and inspiration to the European Forum. Their victory shows that social democracy is alive in south-eastern Europe. It will be the first time since the country secession from former Yugoslavia in 1991 that Slovenia will have a left-wing oriented government. It is most likely that SD will form a government with the liberal LDS (5,19 % of the votes) and the new party Zares (9,4 % of the votes).
