Existence of Belarus' Social Democratic Party under threat

Tue 25 Aug 2009 Existence of Belarus' Social Democratic Party under threat

In accordance with a judgement of the Court, the Belarusian Social Democratic Party Narodnaya Hramada will have to leave the building where its Head Office is situated. This was announced by the party’s President, Anatoliy Levkovich. The Court’s decision has put the existence of the party under threat. In line with Belarusian legislation, in case a party looses its legal address it is subject to liquidation. The judgement was made after an arbitrator was appointed to regulate a conflict on rent between the Social Democratic party and the new president of the local corporation for real estates.

“The Court has taken a decision, according to which we have to clear the building before 15 October”, was stated by Levkovich in an interview. “This decision, as well as Belarusian legislation has put the party in a difficult situation, as finding a new legal address won’t be that easy”, Levkovich added.

In the upcoming days the party is planning to look for ways to find a new legal address for the party’s office. “Fortunately, we have still time to discuss this issue, which will be done at the party’s congress”, was said by the vice-president of the Social Democratic Party, Igor Maslovskiy. Levkovich pointed out that he will search across the entire country for a new place for his party office, but naturally he hopes the office will be in the Belarusian capital of Minsk.
