Presidential elections in Moldova to take place on December 7th

Fri 27 Nov 2009 Presidential elections in Moldova to take place on December 7th

Today the Moldovan parliament decided to schedule the upcoming Presidential elections for December 7th. This will be the second and final attempt to elect the next President, as according to Moldovan law, should the parliament fail it is to be disbanded and new parliamentary elections should be announced – to take place no sooner than spring 2010.

The first attempt, that took place on November 10th, failed because the ruling coalition Alliance for European Integration (AEI) did not manage to get the 8 communist votes needed to elect its candidate, Marian Lupu, leader of the Democratic Party (DPM). At the time, the entire communist fraction boycotted the vote, as many communists consider Lupu a traitor for leaving their party for the DPM after the 5 April parliamentary elections, thus ensuring DPMs presence in parliament and a majority for the AEI.

In an attempt to get the 8 votes needed from the Communist fraction, the AEI has sent a 12-point proposal to the party’s headquarters. No reactions from the latter have yet been made.
