Dozens of people were injured in Sarajevo yesterday (21 April) after clashes between police and protesting war veterans turned violent. The police have launched a major investigation into the incident. According to official police reports, 69 people were injured, including police officers.

On Friday 16 April the European Forum in cooperation with the S&D Group in the European Parliament organised an assessment visit to Serbia to analyse the political situation on the ground considering Serbia’s EU integration and recent political developments. The visit included meetings with government representatives, social democratic parties and partner foundation, journalists and the outgoing governor of the Bank of Serbia who set out the economic situation in Serbia. The delegation was headed by Hannes Swoboda, Vice-President of the S&D Group and Jan Marinus Wiersma, Vice-President of the European Forum.

On Saturday the 17th of April, the European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity and the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D Group) organized a conference in Belgrade, titled ‘Strategies for Roma Political inclusion in Western Balkans’. The main aim of the conference was to bring important (social) democratic political actors from the Western Balkans and the European Union together in order to discuss the current situation regarding Roma. Furthermore, representatives from the Roma community in Belgrade, experts from several NGO’s and political parties participated in the conference and discussed during the two panel discussions with each other about the current situation regarding Roma. Before the beginning of the conference, the participants visited a Roma community in Belgrade, Blok 67.

Turkish Cypriot hardliner, Dervis Eroglu (72), yesterday (18 April) has defeated incumbent President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Mehmet Ali Talat, in elections that might be of great influence on the EU membership application of Turkey. Official results showed this after nearly all votes were counted.

The declaration was signed by SDE's Chairman Mr. Jüri Pihl and People's Union Chairman Mr. Karel Rüütli.

Viktor Orban, the leader of Fidesz, who is set to be the next prime minister, stated that "Hungarians voted on Hungary and Hungary's future. Today Hungary's citizens have defeated hopelessness.

On 7 April it was reported that seventeen people have been killed and more than 100 injured in escalating clashes between protesters and police in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
Protesters attacked President Kurmanbek Bakiyev's offices and stormed the state TV and radio headquarters, taking them briefly off air. There are reports police fired live rounds after failing to disperse people with tear gas and stun grenades. President Bakiyev has declared a state of emergency in protest-hit areas.

On 31 March, after 13 hours of heated debate, the Serbian Parliament adopted a landmark declaration condemning crimes committed against more than 7,000 Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys in Srebrenica in July 1995. People were able to follow the debate live on the Serbian television.

On Monday (29 March) Moscow has suffered its deadliest terrorist attack in six years. Two suicide attacks during Monday morning's rush hour on Moscow’s metro stations have left at least 39 people dead and dozens more injured. The bombings – one at Lubyanka station that serves the nearby headquarters of the Federal Security Service (FSB), the former KGB – underscored the country's vulnerability to militants. The second bombing took place at another centrally situated station, the Park Kultury metro station. The attacks were carried out by two female bombers, which were said to come from the North Caucasus province of Chechnya.

Five years after street protests in Kyrgyzstan led to the resignation of long-time leader Askar Akaev, citizens and politicians alike are now unhappy with the outcome of the Tulip Revolution, saying it merely replaced one corrupt strongman with another. Last week, several thousand opposition supporters rallied in Bishkek and some other towns in Kyrgyzstan, airing wide-ranging grievances varying from high energy prices to a government clampdown on independent media.
