This was the third of a series of the so-called “Wider Europe Conferences” of the European Forum. The previous were in Ukraine (2003) and Moldova (2004). During all meetings the partner political parties were sitting together on one table and discussing the political challenges and opportunities in the (political) cooperation between the European Union actors and the regional ones.

The conference in Georgia added to this experience since it was truly a regional conference, having many participants from the three South Caucasus republics. Also, not only political party representatives, but the Georgian government, EU ambassadors, the OSCE, international organisations, the European Commission, NGO’s, academics and trade unions were present. This added to a broader understanding of the current situation and needs of the region. At the same time, it was the first activity of the European Forum in the region, and gave the opportunity of the regional political players to meet the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, and representatives of the political foundations and parties, members of the European Forum. Many new activities and cooperation forms are expected to arise as a consequence of this conference.
